( 3 / 7612 )每年的2月2日是美国传统的土拨鼠日，在这一天，冬眠的土拨鼠要醒过来，从洞里出来预测春天。一般来说，土拨鼠要看自己的影子，如果看到影子了，就回洞里接着睡大觉去，因为春天还要再等6个星期才能到来，如果土拨鼠看不到自己的影子，就说明春天就要到了。
为什么要选择2月2日呢？因为这个日子来自“圣烛节(Candlemas)”，就是在圣诞节后第40天，这一天，天主教徒点起蜡烛来纪念圣母玛丽。这是个欧洲的传统，正如诗歌里唱的：

If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Winter will not come again.
当德国移民在宾西法尼亚州定居以后，这些被称为Pennsylvania Dutch的人把这个传统带到了美国，预测春天的光荣任务就交给了美国的原住民“土拨鼠”。

在传统的土拨鼠日这一天，主人公陷入了一个偷天陷阱（这部片子的另一个译名），每当他第二天醒来，都是相同的一天：土拨鼠日。这永恒的一天中，永远都是相同的人与事。必然有一个人要在路上相遇，必然有一个人要被汽车撞死。在起初的一段痛不欲生的阶段之后，这个倒霉鬼发现自己即使四处捣乱被关进监狱，即使从十层楼顶跳下去，第二天清晨还是舒舒服服的躺在自己床上，开始又一个阳光灿烂的土拨鼠日。他开始大彻大悟：原来没有明天也就意味着一切行为都没有后果。没有明天也就意味着对于未来的全知全能。
